Active diluent EPD BD
Reactive Diluent EPD BD is used to specifically reduce the viscosity of epoxy resins and thereby improves flow behaviour, fibre wet-out and processing. Unlike conventional solvents, this reactive diluent cures together with the resin system and remains permanently integrated in the epoxy resin matrix.
Reactive Diluent EPD BD is a difunctional, reactive diluent for epoxy resins. It is added to the resin component in order to reduce viscosity and make processing easier in laminating, casting and impregnation applications.
The reduced resin viscosity improves the wet-out of fibre reinforcements such as glass, carbon and aramid fabrics. This is particularly useful for fine fabrics, complex component geometries, narrow gaps, casting applications and processes where improved resin flow is required.
Unlike solvent-based thinners, EPD BD does not evaporate, but reacts during curing. Its difunctional structure results in a comparatively low influence on important mechanical properties, chemical resistance and heat deflection temperature.
Advantages
- Good thinning effect for targeted reduction of resin viscosity
- Solvent-free and reactively integrated into the resin system
- Difunctional, with comparatively low influence on important material properties
- Improves flow behaviour and wet-out of fibre reinforcements
- Makes laminating, casting and impregnation processes easier
- Suitable for professional applications in mould making, model making, composite processing and industrial production
Typical applications
- Hand lay-up and vacuum laminating
- Resin infusion and impregnation of fabrics and multiaxial reinforcements
- Casting applications with epoxy resin
- Mould and model making
- CFRP and GRP components
- Repair, development and laboratory applications
Dosage
The diluent is added to the resin component. The recommended addition is up to a maximum of 10 %. The exact dosage depends on the resin system used, the desired viscosity reduction and the requirements placed on the cured component.
Notes on material properties
Reactive Diluent EPD BD can increase the elongation at break and impact strength of the cured resin. However, with increasing addition levels, heat deflection temperature as well as tensile, compressive and flexural strength may decrease. The dosage should therefore be limited to the amount required for processing.
