Surface Veil for High-Quality GRP and Composite Laminates

The 30 g/m² glass nonwoven is a lightweight surface veil designed for composite manufacturing. It improves the surface quality of GRP and composite components, reduces print-through of glass fabrics and multiaxial reinforcements, and creates a uniform resin-rich surface layer. When used with polyester and vinyl ester resins, it produces smooth, durable surfaces with a high-quality finish. The glass nonwoven is ideal for mould making, boat building, automotive applications and many other composite manufacturing processes.

Product Description

The glass nonwoven is made from finely distributed C-glass fibres arranged in a random fibre structure and bonded with a chemical, styrene-soluble binder. During processing with polyester or vinyl ester resins, the binder dissolves completely, allowing the nonwoven to become fully impregnated and form a smooth, resin-rich surface layer.

This surface layer significantly improves the finish of the laminate while reducing print-through of the underlying glass fabrics or multiaxial reinforcements. The result is a smoother, more attractive surface that often requires less sanding and finishing.

In addition, the glass nonwoven improves impact and abrasion resistance while promoting a more uniform resin distribution. The result is a robust composite component with an enhanced surface appearance.

When processed with epoxy resins, the binder does not dissolve. As a result, the nonwoven remains comparatively stiff and conforms less readily to complex contours. For epoxy laminates, specially developed surface veils are therefore recommended. On flat or gently curved components, however, this glass nonwoven can still be used depending on the application.

Your Benefits

  • Produces smooth, high-quality laminate surfaces.
  • Reduces print-through of glass fabrics and multiaxial reinforcements.
  • Creates a uniform, resin-rich surface layer.
  • Improves impact and abrasion resistance.
  • Excellent processability with polyester and vinyl ester resins.
  • Ideal as the first reinforcement layer directly beneath the laminate surface.

Typical Applications

The glass nonwoven is used wherever high mechanical performance must be combined with an excellent surface finish.

  • GRP and composite laminates
  • Boat and yacht building
  • Automotive and motorsport applications
  • Mould and pattern making
  • Technical composite components
  • Repair and surface enhancement of existing laminate parts

Processing

The glass nonwoven is typically applied as the first reinforcement layer directly beneath the laminate surface. In combination with polyester or vinyl ester resins, it forms a uniform, resin-rich surface layer that significantly improves the final appearance of the laminate.

When using the hand lay-up process, a fibre volume content of approximately 10–20 % can typically be achieved.

Technical Notes

  • Optimised for use with polyester and vinyl ester resin systems.
  • Only conditionally suitable for epoxy resins, as the binder does not dissolve and the nonwoven therefore remains comparatively stiff.
  • This product is intended exclusively for composite manufacturing. It is not designed for painting, decorating or renovation applications.
