Construction of a wood-carbon racing bike - Thesis by Vincenz Sonderegger and Adrian Müller

In their thesis, Adrian and Vincenz are pursuing the development and construction of a completely new racing bike frame.

They combine wood and carbon so that carbon can be used more efficiently and only the amount of material necessary for strength and rigidity is used. This is possible because the wooden form allows the carbon to be used with such thin walls.

Horyzn - Lightweight construction in lifesaving

HORYZN is a student initiative at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) that is developing an autonomous, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone to quickly deliver defibrillators or blood in medical emergencies—such as heart attacks—before the ambulance arrives, thereby saving lives.

The drone is designed to carry up to 2 kg of payload and, thanks to its design, can also reach hard-to-access locations, with the defibrillator being easy for a layperson to operate.

Cello endpin made of carbon fibre tube

A cello endpin is the spike on the cello that supports the instrument on the floor when playing and is fixed at the desired playing height. It thus fulfills a central ergonomic and acoustic function.

A carbon fibre cello endpin offers significant advantages over metal or aluminum pins.

A carbon fibre cello endpin:

  • positively alters the sound characteristics by cleanly transmitting vibrations,

  • improves response and clarity of tone,

  • provides more precise tone development, especially in low frequencies.

Many professional cellists report a more open, resonant sound compared to steel or aluminum endpins.
