Building a Canoe Using Hand Layup _ PHWT Laboratory Practicum
Laboratory Practicum for the “Fibre-Reinforced Composites and Hybrid Materials” Module at the Private University of Applied Sciences Vechta/Diepholz (PHWT)
As part of the dual degree program at PHWT, engineering students have the opportunity to take the elective course “Fibre-Reinforced Composites and Hybrid Materials.” The laboratory practicum is an integral part of this practice-oriented training.
In previous years, only small test specimens such as plates, angles, or miniature models were manufactured. In the summer semester of 2024, an attempt was made for the first time to build a four-person Canadian canoe.
An “original” four-person Canadian canoe served as the template. The instructors first created a mould from this canoe.
Acrylic paint on carbon fibre fabric
For this client project, Mr. Dell Antone applied his artwork directly to carbon fiber fabric.
Epoxy resin was deliberately not used, so that the characteristic texture and feel of the dry fabric were preserved. The designs were applied using acrylic paints, creating an intriguing contrast between the technical appearance of the material and the custom artwork.

Sehr geehrte Frau Distelkamp,
